Fat

Dietary fats play a crucial role in our overall health, impacting everything from heart health to cellular function. They are categorized into three main types: saturated fats, unsaturated fats and trans fats, each having distinct health impacts and benefits.

  • Saturated fats - found in animal products and some plant oils, saturated fats were once thought to contribute to heart disease by raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. However, recent studies suggest that the link may not be as clear-cut as previously believed. While consuming them in moderation is key, completely eliminating them from the diet is not necessary.
  • Unsaturated fats - found in foods like avocados, nuts, and vegetable oils, and includes both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats
  • Trans fats - largely produced industrially and found in processed foods, trans fats are linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes

While all fats are calorie-dense and therefore should be consumed in moderation, focusing on unsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids while limiting saturated and avoiding trans fats is beneficial for health. Balancing different types of fats is key to a healthy diet, contributing to improved heart health, reduced inflammation, and overall well-being.
