Assistive Technology

Assistive technology encompasses a range of tools designed to aid individuals with disabilities, such as:

  • mobility aids
  • hearing aids
  • visual aids (e.g. screen readers, smart glasses)
  • communication devices (e.g. augmentative and alternative communication, AAC)
  • cognitive aids (to help with memory, organisation, and task management)

Technology is improving all types of assistive technologies, for example, lighter wheelchairs with better battery life, smaller and more discreet devices,  and smartphone integration.  In addition, recent advancements are making these devices smarter, more intuitive, and more personalised to the user's needs.
