Eating less to live longer? Study in fruit fly finds no benefit

Life extending benefit of dietary restriction might depend upon genetic makeup

04-Jun-2020

Key points from article :

Analysis of 160 strains of fruit fly shows that lifespan & health-span are not linked under dietary restriction.

Lifespan and physical abilities of more than 50,000 flies were studied.

Nutrient-dependent changes in lifespan and age-related changes in physical activity to measure healthspan were measured.

97% strains showed some lifespan or healthspan extension in response to dietary restriction.

50% strains showed a significantly positive response to dietary restriction for both.

13% of the strains were more vigorous, yet died sooner with dietary restriction.

5% lived longer but spent more time in poor health.

32% of the strains showed no benefits or detriments to lifespan or healthspan.

"Dietary restriction works, but may not be the panacea for those wanting to extend healthspan, delay age-related diseases, and extend lifespan," - Pankaj Kapahi, senior author on the paper.
