Illegal yohimbine and synephrine pills found online without health warning labels

Products promising weight loss are for sale on internet; users may face health complications

25-Aug-2021

Key points from article :

Which? found products on sale online with plant extracts that can make users agitated and increase their heart rate and blood pressure.

Contained either yohimbine or synephrine - potential to cause harm if used without medical supervision or advice.

People assume that herbal extracts are harmless because they occur naturally and not realise that they are potentially risky.

Which? bought 9 products that are used to lose weight, bodybuilders and gym-goers, through eBay, Wish and AliExpress.

Of those, two included no health warnings or dosage information.

“You’d see secondary organ damage because of the rise in BP, and potentially damage to the cardiovascular system”, - James Coulson, toxicology expert.

A person had ended up with sky-high pulse and BP after 300mg of yohimbine before a gym workout.

Ebay and AliExpress removed the listings for the products, while Wish said it was in the process of doing so.
