University of Bordeaux

An open, creative, independent, demanding university

The University of Bordeaux was founded by Pope Eugene IV on 7th June 1441 at the instigation of Pey Berland, the archbishop of Bordeaux (1430 - 1456).

While the city was under English rule, the University of Bordeaux, with its four faculties (art, medicine, law and theology) made it possible for students from the Duchy of Aquitaine to study.

The University of Bordeaux, heir to a history of nearly six centuries, is a multidisciplinary university with deep regional roots that reach out to the European and international level. It is now striving to rise to the challenge of environmental and societal transitions and improve the well-being of its entire community.

By its very nature, the university is open to the world and the place for learning, innovation and the transmission of knowledge.
