UV LED light - a new hope amidst the pandemic

Effective in killing human coronavirus - residential use not recommended due to hazardous effects

20-Dec-2020

Key points from article :

UV light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can quickly and effectively kill the human coronavirus HCoV-OC43.

Different UV LED bulbs emitting varying wavelengths were tested.

Virus well plate received an incident irradiance of 0.4 mW/cm2.

Wavelengths of 285 were highly effective at inactivating the virus - inactivating 99.9% of the coronavirus in 30 seconds.

Other viruses showed similar sensitivity to these wavelengths - could be useful against SARS-CoV-2.

300nm LEDs required 3 times the dose of 285nm radiation.

285-nm UV LED is less expensive and more readily available than the 265-nm variety.

“We discovered that it is quite simple to kill the coronavirus using LED bulbs that radiate [UV] light.” — Prof. Hadas Mamane, researcher.

Researchers used HCoV-OC43 instead of SARS-CoV-2 because it only requires Bio Safety Level 2.

However this technology is hazardous and not recommended for residential use.
