UK life expectancy dropping relative to other countries

Driven by income inequality and resulting larger fall in poorer groups

70 years ago the UK was seventh in the world for life expectancy.

By 2021 the country had fallen to 29th in the world.

Rise in income inequalities in the UK during and after the 1980s had definitely contributed to decline, which "also saw an increase in the variation in life expectancy between different social groups," said Professor Martin McKee.

"a relative worsening of population health is evidence that all is not well. It has historically been an early sign of severe political and economic problems" - Dr Lucinda Hiam.

Research by University of Oxford and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine published in Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.
