A protein that plays a key role in the making of cholesterol plaques: TRB1

Still at an early stage in research - working on mouse models

11-Nov-2019

Key points from article :

Tribbles 1 (TRIB1) is expressed by macrophages and it's is linked to formation of atherosclerotic plaques.

Macrophages detect fat deposits on their vessel walls and transform into foam cells.

These foam cells eventually get overwhelmed and die leading to tissue damage.

TRIB1 regulates the amount of cholesterol taken up by foam cells in mouse models..

By decreasing the presence of TRIB1, disease progression was reversed.

Potential therapy to prevent atherosclerosis if there's a way to block or reduce TRIB1 activity.
