Anti-ageing substance in sea squirts improved brain health in older mice

Plasmalogen supplement reversed ageing signs in mice; might as well keeps you young

11-May-2022

Key points from article :

Supplementing a diet with the sea organisms Ascidiacea (sea squirts) reverses some major ageing signs in an animal model.
Sea organisms contain plasmalogens, which are vital to our body processes.
Plasmalogens are naturally found all over our bodies, but the amount decreases as we get older.
Researchers studied the effects of adding plasmalogens to the diet of aged mice.
“Plasmalogens may not just stop cognitive decline, but may reverse cognitive impairments,” says Lei Fu, corresponding author.
Effects of plasmalogen supplement on aged mice include:
- higher number and quality of synapses
- better performance in learning and memory tasks
- decreased inflammation
- thicker and glossier hair.
Fu is so convinced that he takes a plasmalogen supplement each day.
“Plasmalogen supplements might be a potential strategy for halting neurodegeneration and promoting neuroregeneration.”
