Team Leader of Gastrointestinal Cancer Biology and Genomics at The Institute Of Cancer Research.
Dr Valeri is a Clinician/Scientist working to discover novel therapeutic targets and novel biomarkers for gastrointestinal cancers. He leads the Gastrointestinal Cancer Biology and Genomics Team within the Centre for Molecular Pathology at the ICR. Dr Valeri is interested in the study of gastrointestinal cancers with a special focus on colorectal and gastro-oesophageal cancers. Research in Nicola’s Lab is moving in three main directions: 1) studying circulating microRNAs as predictors or response in gastrointestinal cancer patients; 2) Using large scale RNAi screenings to define novel therapeutic targets; 3) Developing novel pre-clinical models for drug testing and study mechanisms of resistance. Nicola received his medical training in Italy where he completed his residency and fellowship in Medical Oncology in 2008. After spending his last year of training in the States Nicola was captivated by the promises and challenges of microRNAs research and went on to undertake his Research Fellowship in Prof. Croce’s Lab investigating the role of non-coding RNAs in gastrointestinal cancers. After 5 years in the States, Dr Valeri moved to Glasgow University as Clinical Lecturer in 2012 and he was then promoted Senior Clinical Lecturer in Medical Oncology at the beginning of 2013. Nicola was appointed as one of the New Team Leaders at the Centre of Molecular Pathology in October 2013.
