Executive Director of the Centre for AI and Robotics (CAIR)
Hongbin Liu is Executive Director of the Centre for AI and Robotics (CAIR), Hong Kong Institute of Science & Innovation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a Professor at Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Automation (CASIA), and Group Director for intelligent minimally invasive technologies of CASIA. Prior to joining Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prior to joining CAS, he served as a Reader in Medical Robotics at King’s College London (KCL), UK and Director of the Haptics Mechatronics and Medical Robotics (HaMMeR) Laboratory. Liu is the recipient of prestigious national talent award, CAS talent award.
Liu has been focusing on research and development of haptic sensing technology and minimally invasive flexible surgical robotic system in the past 15 years. His group aims to create fully sensorized surgical robot with self-evolving intelligence for safer and more effective diagnosis and treatment. Research directions include haptic and proprioceptive sensing, real-time surgical simulation, soft/flexible robot actuation, and multimodality-based navigation and control. His research has led to the clinical translation of a series of flexible surgical robotic systems for applications such as minimally invasive neurosurgery, bronchoscopy as well as vascular surgery.
