Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the Queen's University Belfast.
Aedín has worked in dietary polyphenol research since 1988 and her research focuses on understanding the impact of a range of plant bioactives, including flavonoids, on cardiometabolic health. Current research is leading the way in understanding the relative importance of metabolism and the gut microbiome in the efficacy of specific flavonoids (with a current focus on anthocyanins). Her research applies an integrated approach to investigate the impact of flavonoids on human health which spans from fundamental mechanistic studies to intervention and population-based studies. She has extensive experience of inter-disciplinary food research from crop to clinic. She was awarded the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2013 and has served on various committees and expert panels. She currently serves on REF2021, sub-panel 3 (having previously served on sub-panels in both RAE2008 and REF2014). She was elected a Fellow of the American Heart Association in 2017 and has been a Fellow of the Society for Biology and the Royal Society of Chemistry for a number of years. She has long-term collaborations with scientists across the EU and North America including the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.
