Sutton Council in south London is piloting an innovative initiative using AI-powered sensors to support vulnerable individuals in their homes. The system tracks movement, temperature, light, and appliance usage to establish daily routines and alert carers when deviations occur, such as a missed meal, a fall, or an open door left unattended. This technology aims to help people live independently for longer while providing reassurance to families and caregivers.

Margaret Linehan, an 86-year-old with dementia, is one of 1,287 households benefiting from the system. She finds comfort in knowing help is available if needed, like during a late-night tea craving that prompted a concerned call from her son. Her daughter-in-law, Marianne, uses a linked app to monitor Margaret’s activity, ensuring she’s safe and moving around as usual.

The sensors, which don’t include cameras or microphones, prioritize privacy while offering practical support. Over the past year, the system detected more than 1,800 falls, referring cases to urgent response services. Bradley Cooper, a tech-enabled social care manager, explained that the AI learns individual routines over time, identifying potential declines or significant events.

This trial is part of a larger government program led by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to integrate AI into public services, aiming to save money and enhance care quality. By reducing hospital admissions and enabling early interventions, the initiative could transform how care is delivered.

Families like the Linehans describe the system as “brilliant,” highlighting its role in balancing independence with safety. With its focus on dignity and practicality, this approach could pave the way for wider adoption of AI in caregiving.
