UK policies are successful in reducing air pollution

Clean Air Strategy could be the key to eliminating air pollution in UK

Over the last 40 years several policies contributed to reduce air pollution and associated mortality rates.

Legislations such as 1979 UN Air Convention, Clean Air Act 1993, Environment Act 1995 were responsible.

Total annual emission of fine particulate matter, NOx , SO2 and MNVOC reduced between 58% and 93%.

Mortality rates due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases declined by 56% and 44%.

Research led by the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology.
