Key points from article :

New research revealed that drinking within NHS guidelines could still lead to hospitalisation.

Research was conducted by Dr Rudolph Schutte, associate professor at Anglia Ruskin University.

Study looked at 333,259 alcohol consumers aged 40 to 69.

Data was collected on their hospital admissions related to cardiovascular events and cerebrovascular disease.

Seven-year study revealed consuming under 14 units a week had an increased risk of ending up in hospital.

Dr Schutte said that the biggest myth is the suggestion of health benefits from low to moderate alcohol consumption.

He suggested that the NHS guidelines of a maximum of 14 units each week be reduced.

He hopes that “it will be like smoking, with health warnings.”
