Senescent cells show cellular cannibalism in mouse and human cancer cells

They're often called zombie cells - and turns out they are. Time to kill them with senolytics!

28-Oct-2019

Key points from article :

Senescent cells persist in tissues and contribute to ageing and cancer progression.

These persistent senescent cells eat their neighbouring cells alive.

Cells that were engulfed by the senescent cells were neighbouring senescent or non-senescent cancer cells.

Chemotherapy drugs can cause cancer cells to enter a state of senescence.

Promote tumour survival by secreting growth factors and signalling molecules called cytokines.

Need more research to see if normal cells are eaten in aged tissue, leading to tissue degeneration.
