Nasal swab and blood test for early detection of lung cancer

People in Hampshire and Yorkshire will be invited for participation in the trial

A new test is being trialled to improve the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

10,000 people in Hampshire and Yorkshire will be invited to undergo the new iDx Lung diagnostic tests during the next three years.

“We can find better ways to detect lung cancer in its early stages and...have the best chance of a cure,” - Peter Johnson, professor at University of Southampton.

Involves those at high risk of lung cancer being offered a CT scan along with a nasal swab and blood sample for the test.

“Samples will be analysed for changes that indicate early signs of cancer developing,” - Victoria Goss, programme manager for iDx lung.

Funded by a £2.75 million grant from UK Research and Innovation’s ISCF and £750,000 from Cancer Research UK and is part of a £10 million from the Early Diagnosis Mission.

Trial being run by the University of Southampton and University of Leeds.
