With so many skincare products claiming to keep your skin youthful and healthy, it’s no wonder people are looking for the ultimate solution. Retinol, a compound derived from vitamin A, is one of the most popular ingredients found in anti-ageing creams. However, the question remains: does it really work?

Dr. Natalia Spierings, a consultant dermatologist in London, delved into this topic by conducting a systematic review of over-the-counter vitamin A products. Her research aimed to assess the effectiveness of these products in improving the appearance of aged skin.

Vitamin A is essential for cell division, immune function, and vision, but retinol and its related compounds, known as retinoids, are more than just vitamins. They regulate skin cell growth and collagen production, both of which can impact how youthful your skin looks. While retinol is available over the counter, stronger forms like retinoic acid (tretinoin) require a prescription. Despite the popularity of these products, the evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited.

Dr. Spierings examined nine randomized, double-blind clinical trials, which are considered the gold standard in research. Four of these trials found no significant benefits of using retinol-based treatments over a basic formula with no active ingredient. The other trials that showed mild improvements in fine lines and wrinkles had methodological flaws, making their results unreliable. Eight of the nine trials were funded by the manufacturers of the products tested, raising concerns about potential bias in the findings.

On the other hand, prescription-strength tretinoin, or retinoic acid, has shown consistent, statistically significant improvements in reducing fine lines, pigmentation, and skin roughness. However, these results are not without limitations. Higher strengths of tretinoin can cause irritation, and more long-term studies are needed to determine which formulations and concentrations are most effective. Despite these concerns, Dr. Spierings emphasizes that tretinoin is the only product that has been proven to improve the appearance of aged skin effectively.

If you're considering using retinoids, be aware that they can cause dryness, redness, and irritation when you first start using them. Incorporating them slowly into your routine can help minimize these side effects. Also, using sunscreen is essential, as retinoids can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. While prescription retinoids can be effective, they need to be used consistently for long-term results.

Ultimately, Dr. Spierings argues that there’s no need to buy expensive skincare products to maintain healthy, youthful skin. Simple habits like avoiding the sun, using sunscreen, getting enough sleep, managing stress, and not smoking are key to preserving your skin’s health as you age. Instead of relying on costly creams, focus on maintaining your overall wellbeing and keeping your skin protected from the sun.
