Mitochondrial transplants are successful but benefits are short lived

May be a solution to ageing related mitochondrial dysfunction which leads to diseases

25-Mar-2020

Key points from article :

Bacteria got engulfed in to eukaryotic cells and became mitochondria over many million years.

Theoretically possible to introduce mitochondria in to cells directly in a therapeutic way.

Isolated mitochondria and inserted them in to target cardiomyocytes using a transplant technique.

Cellular energy production increased and cells were supercharged for a short time duration.

Mitochondria taken from other cells as well as from rats were transplanted successfully.

Needs more research to see if these mitochondria get adopted and have long lasting effects.
