Magic mushrooms might be the future treatment for depression

A hallucinogen found in magic mushrooms can "reset" the brains of people with untreatable depression

14-Oct-2017

Key points from article :

The study was with 19 patients, who ceased to be depressed and experienced changes in their brain activity.

Patients had been given psychedelic ingredient psilocybin.

Studies suggest that psilocybin could have a role in depression that allows people to escape from the symptoms.

Psilocybin affects two key areas of the brain - the amygdala and the default-mode network.

The amygdala – section of the brain responsible for fear and anxiety - became less active.

The default-mode network - a collaboration of different brain regions - became more stable.

Larger studies are still needed before psilocybin could be accepted as a treatment for depression.
