Large meta-study questions evidence of health risk of meat in diet

For now, it's probably best to continue to minimise red and processed meat consumption

30-Sep-2019

Key points from article :

New research claims red and processed meat is probably not harmful to our health.

Cannot say with any certainty that eating it causes cancer, diabetes or heart disease.

Many scientists agree that the evidence from studies around the world was generally poor.

Prof. Willett, at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, criticised the report:

1. many study participants were young and unlikely to succumb to illness in the short trial length

2. magnitude of risk is similar to that of many drugs we use for treating high blood cholesterol and blood pressure

Review of 12 randomised control trials including 54,000 individuals did not find a statistically significant risk of heart disease, cancer, or diabete.

Dietary studies are notoriously difficult to do because people may not always eat what they say they do.
