Human trial results of resveratrol may benefit heart health

Daily supplementation with resveratrol proved to improve heart function

Resveratrol, a naturally occurring stilbenoid is present in grapes, peanuts, cocoa, blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries.

It is known to increase the activity of longevity gene, SIRT1.

Researchers explored the effects of resveratrol in heart failure humans.

Enrolled 60 mild to moderate patients receiving either 100-mg resveratrol daily or placebo for 3months.

Echocardiography, a six-minute walk test, spirometry, quality of life questionnaire and RNA profile analysis were performed.

Participants given resveratrol saw an improvement in heart function.

Exercise capacity, ventilation parameters and quality of life improved significantly.

Biomarkers for heart failure (NT-proBNP and galectin-3) and inflammatory cytokines were also reduced.

C-reactive protein, ferritin, white blood cell count showed no significant change.

Results are mostly positive but it should be followed up by a larger-scale trial.
