Cervical cancer successfully cured with gene editing in mice

If the right genes to tackle are identified, this could be the cure for all cancers

10-Oct-2019

Key points from article :

Scientists cure cervical cancer in mice using "stealth" nanoparticles.

Search out the cancer-causing gene in cancer cells and edit it.

Introduces some extra DNA that causes the gene to be misread and stop being made.

As the altered gene cannot produce the proteins required for cancer growth the cell dies.

Treated mice have 100% survival and no tumours but needs to measure the effect on other genes.

Plans to start human trials of the gene therapy within the next five years.
