A soup and shake diet plan to combat type 2 diabetes

No drugs required - nearly half of patients reverse their diabetes

01-Sep-2020

Key points from article :

Type 2 diabetes patients will be given a soup-and-shake diet weight-loss plan for free in NHS.

Switching to the low-calorie liquid diet can put diabetes into remission.

Obesity and Type 2 diabetes are linked and both increase the risk of complications from Covid-19.

Some NHS patients have already benefited from the year-long diet and exercise plan.

Patients diagnosed with diabetes in the last 6 years with unhealthy weight will be included.

Shakes and soups are given for a few months initially.

Solid foods are reintroduced once weight loss is acheived and the patient is put on a nutritious diet and regular exercise.

Studies show almost half of those who went on the diet achieved remission of their type 2 diabetes after one year.

Prof Jonathan Valabhji, said: "…NHS, through our Long Term Plan, is rapidly adopting the latest evidence-based treatments to help people stay well.."
