Marc Desmulliez

Associate Principal for Impact at Heriot-Watt University

Marc Desmulliez is Associate Principal for Impact at Heriot-Watt University. He has a background combining electrical engineering, optoelectronics and theoretical physics. His current research focus is on novel manufacturing technologies, medical device manufacturing, microwave sensing for the food industry, and nature inspired manufacturing. He has spun out two companies, MicroStencil Ltd (2003) and MicroSense Technologies Ltd (2017) and a start-up company Birthing Solutions Ltd (2017). Marc recently created the Nature Inspired Manufacturing Centre (NIMC) to understand how to translate biological processes into manufacturing principles, and to research a mythology that would allow companies to systematically harvest the wonders that nature can offer in terms of design solutions, material efficiency and functional interfaces. He currently manages the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre.

Marc graduated from the French Grande Ecole Supelec (Paris) in 1987. After two College Diplomas in Modern Optics and Microwave (U.C.L.) and Theoretical Physics (Cambridge), he obtained his Ph.D. in Optoelectronics at Heriot-Watt University in 1995 and his Master of Advanced Studies (Cambridge) in 2011.
