Liesbeth Veenhoff received her PhD degree (cum laude) at the University of Groningen in 2001, under the supervision Prof. Bert Poolman, studying the mechanism of a bacterial sugar transport protein. As a HFSP- fellow she moved to the laboratory of cellular biology of Prof. Michael Rout at the Rockefeller University in New York. Here, she worked in a collaborative effort to determine the architecture of the Nuclear Pore Complex of baker’s yeast. The intricate structure of this molecular machine fascinated, and the richness of the biology of nuclear transport impressed. So, when moving back, she continued to work on this topic supported by a Veni (2004) and Vidi (2008) grant. In 2010 she moved to the UMCG as an assistant professor and joined ERIBA in 2012. Liesbeth Veenhoff is currently an associate professor, and was awarded a Vici grant in 2020. The role of nuclear transport in cellular aging is the central interest of her lab at ERIBA.
