Giuseppe Maltese is currently Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals. He became a specialist in Elderly Care Medicine in 2006 after spending one year as a Clinical Research Fellow in the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London. In 2009 he was appointed Research Fellow at the University of Cincinnati completing a PhD focused on age-related renal injury after haemorrhagic shock. In 2011 he returned to the United Kingdom to embark on a specialty training in Diabetes and Endocrinology following appointment as a Clinical Academic Lecturer at King’s College London. He trained as Specialist Registrar in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trusts and St George’s University Hospital.
During his lectureship in the Cardiovascular Division at King’s College London he led research projects and contributed to single and multicentre clinical trials as co-investigator. He has authored numerous articles in the field of diabetes, ageing and geriatric medicine in international peer reviewed journals. Over the past 10 years he has been an invited speaker in several international conferences. In 2012 he was awarded the Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy after completing a 2-year Master level programme in medical education and contributed to teaching in both clinical and academic environments. His main clinical interests are in the management of diabetes related complications in young and elderly patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and care of endocrine disorders.
