Emile Van Schaftingen
Professor Emeritus at UCLouvain and director of the Metabolic Research Group at the de Duve Institute
Emile Van Schaftingen is director of the Metabolic Research Group at the de Duve Institute from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL). Dr. Van Schaftingen studied medicine at the UCL, where he graduated in 1978. As a PhD student under supervision of Drs. Henri-Géry Hers and Louis Hue he discovered fructose-2,6-bisphosphate, a master regulator of glycolysis in many cell types and gluconeogenesis in the liver. From this seminal discovery until today, Dr. Van Schaftingen followed a highly creative path of excellent research that has led to other key observations in metabolic regulation, metabolic disease, and enzymatic protein repair. KU Leuven is pleased and honoured to celebrate and host an outstanding scientist from its sister university and warmly recommends students and academic staff members to attend the lecture series.
