Elizabeth Bilsland

Assistant Professor at UNICAMP

Experience as a research associate at the Biochemistry Department (University of Cambridge) and PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology (Gothenburg University) has enabled me to gain vast experience in engineering yeast strains and in the development on high-throughput (HTP) screening methods. My background combines a) broad understanding of yeast biology, b) complex genetic manipulations, c) heterologous protein expression, d) high-throughput screens and e) biochemical assays for validation of high-throughput hits.

As PI in Brazil, I established the Synthetic Biology Laboratory, where we use the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a platform for the discovery of new drugs. This includes the genetic engineering of various heterologous pathways for large-scale screening of novel antiparasitic compounds or for the screen of inhibitors of human aggregation-prone proteins such as TDP43, FUS and OPTN. We also employ yeast chemical genomic profiling to identify the mechanism of action of antiparasitic compounds, and to uncover drug import routes through yeast and human plasma membrane.
