Bernd Debusmann Jr.

Freelance journalist, BBC news, Sep22

A Mexico-born reporter with print, broadcast and wire service experience currently in Washington DC with the BBC after working in the Middle East for about six years, most recently with Arabian Business magazine in Dubai.

Before taking up the Dubai job, he worked as a producer on the Reuters Latin American TV desk in Washington DC, from where he moved to New York to cover City Hall, the NYPD, and court cases as a text reporter for Reuters news service. In 2012, he moved to his native Mexico (I’m a citizen of Mexico, Germany and the U.S.), first for Reuters TV and then as a freelance journalist writing for a variety of publications, including GlobalPost and Fox Latino.

His work has also appeared in the Daily Telegraph and a number of other publications. Then, the Middle East beckoned. His interest in the area has been deepened by travel in Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, the West Bank, Israel and the GCC, among other places. From Dubai, he closely followed the wars in Syria and Yemen as well as the oil price-induced changes in Saudi Arabia.

He graduated 'with distinction' from City University London's MA International Journalism program and hold a BA in political science from Dickinson College in Carlisle PA, USA.

He also attended a Hostile Environments and Emergency First Aid (HEFAT) course run by Global Journalist Security in DC, and another hostile environments course run by Hawthorne Proactive in Mexico City.
