American Family Physician (AFP) is a semimonthly, peer-reviewed journal of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). AFP’s chief objective is to provide high-quality continuing medical education for more than 190,000 family physicians and other primary care clinicians. American Family Physician was first published in 1950 as GP (General Practitioner). It acquired its current name, American Family Physician, in 1971.

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents more than 94,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
