A former space scientist, I turned from studying pulsars and binary stars to fiction. I'm now the author of sixteen novels and more than seventy short stories. My work has been shortlisted for the Hugo, Arthur C Clarke and Sturgeon awards, and I have won the Seiun, Sidewise, European Science Fiction Society and Locus awards. My stories have been adapted for stage and television.
