World's largest gene sequencing project in healthcare

100,000 Genomes Project has ended "diagnostic odyssey" for 1 in 4 participants with rare diseases

05-Dec-2018

Key points from article :

People with rare diseases, their family members and cancer patients took part in the project.

First human genome was fully sequenced in 2003, it had taken 13 years and cost £2bn.

Today, a genome's worth of DNA can be sequenced in only 30 minutes, for £600.

About 85,000 people had their entire genetic code sequenced.

Cancer patients also had their tumour DNA mapped, the number of genomes totalled 100,000.

Future plans are to sequence one million genomes in the UK in the next five years.

Transformational project was done by Scientists from Cambridge.
