Survival benefits of metformin in non-diabetics: faulty analysis in a 2014 study

It's not logical to advise people without diabetes to take metformin

08-Aug-2014

Key points from article :

There are no grounds to advise people without diabetes to take metformin.

But the study published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism on Friday 8 August 2014 may try to say otherwise.

It compares mortality in people initiated on metformin with non-diabetic controls.

Several good reasons to consider what this paper tries to say as faulty are mentioned below.

Authors have done a partial comparison of study data and left out the rest.

Have not considered possible confounding factors in their analysis due to lack of data.

People with diabetes undergo frequent intervention and monitoring than those without diabetes.

So this paper cannot conclude that metformin increase lifespan of people without diabetes.
