Stem cell research offers new hope of restoring sight

11-Jan-2017

Key points from article :

End-stage retinal degeneration (e.g. age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosais) is the most common cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness in older adults.

Researchers transplanted stem cell-derived retinal tissues into animals with end-stage retinal degeneration.

Reprogrammed adult mouse skin cells into induced pluripotent stem cells which were then converted into retinal tissue.

Cells formed photoreceptors and directly contacted neighboring cells within the retina.

Procedure restored sight in almost half of the mice.
