Small mobile stem cells finds use in cell therapy for lung conditions

SMS cells play a significant role in lung repair and regeneration, and other inflammatory diseases

02-Mar-2021

Key points from article :

Interaction between Alveolar Type 2 (AT2) cells (lung progenitor cells) and Small Mobile Stem (SMS) cells change the gene expression of the AT2 cells, for regenerating lung cells.

The cell therapy paradigm is based upon the use of "smart drugs."

Small Mobile Stem (SMS) cells have a substantial effect on a key player in lung regeneration (alveolar type 2 cells, lung progenitor cells).

SMS cells induce important changes to gene expression, upregulating pro-regenerative gene expression, pathogen protection, and lung integrity.

It suppresses certain inflammatory and necrotic pathways.

These changes encompass more than 1,300 genes and are conducive to lung regeneration and repair.

The changes in gene expression of alveolar type 2 cells caused by SMS cells include the stimulation of progenitor cell proliferation and are confirmed phenotypically.

"SMS cells can have a potentially significant impact on lung conditions, wound healing applications, and other inflammatory diseases" stated Dr. Roger Schechter, Medical director for wound management, Palomar Health.

SMSbiotech experimental results open the doors to treatment to potentially reverse chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
