Scientists remove retroviral DNA from pig's genetic code

Possible to breed pigs to harvest their organs to meet the demand for new tissue

10-Aug-2017

Key points from article :

Scientists remove a threatening virus from pig’s DNA, making pig-to-man transplantation possible.

Pigs have retroviruses known as porcine endogenous retroviruses (PERV) in their genes.

These retroviruses can be transmitted from pig DNA to human DNA and cause fatal diseases.

Used CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing system to remove these Pervs.

Needs to find ways to overcome immune rejection and physiological incompatibility.
