Protein discovered that keeps skin young

COL17A1 protein promotes wound healing, skin regeneration, and reduces skin ageing

04-Apr-2019

Key points from article :

COL17A1 protein triggers cell competition, eliminates weaker, activates stronger cells replication.

Ageing and UV radiation result in a depletion of COL17A1.

The research team is investigating ways to activate the protein, once it was depleted.

Isolated compounds Y27632 and apocynin are promoting skin regeneration, reducing skin ageing.

Future studies will determine the mechanisms of cell competition in other tissues and organs.

Study published in the journal Nature.
