Protein identified that causes aging in skin

The skin is our largest organ, so reversing its aging would help the whole body

27-Dec-2018

Key points from article :

Skin loses the ability to form fat during aging.

Affects how the skin fights infections and influence the skin's appearance.

Identified a protein (transforming growth factor beta, TGF-B) that stops dermal fibroblasts from converting into fat cells.

Also prevents cells from producing the antimicrobial peptide cathelicidin, which helps protect against bacterial infections.

Inhibiting the TGF-β pathway causes the skin to revert back to a younger function (in mouse models).

The study was published in the Immunity journal.
