Metformin gives diabetics longer life than non-diabetics

In diabetics, metformin produces a decrease in blood glucose.

As a bonus, it decreases blood cholesterol and improves cardiovascular health.

Also associated with a decreased incidence of cancer and improved brain function.

Large trial showed that diabetics treated with metformin had a greater survival rate than matched non-diabetic control patients.

Common, but minor, side-effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and gas.

Overall it has a very good safety record.

Do not take it if you have any problems with liver or kidney function.

Preventative treatment needs to be well tolerated, e.g. 500 mg twice a day.
