High serum uric acid could reduce patient lifespan

Both high and low levels of serum uric acid could be detrimental to survival

05-Nov-2020

Key points from article :

High levels of serum uric acid in your blood could reduce your lifespan by 11 years.

Data of 26,525 patients from the National Kidney Disease Surveillance System was studied.

Median survival reduced by 9.5 years in men with low SUA &11.7 years for men with elevated SUA levels.

Median survival was reduced by almost 6 years for those with high SUA levels in women too.

High levels of SUA are associated kidney failure, hypertension, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

"These associations might in part explain the high mortality that we observed for patients with elevated SUA." - Prof Stack, senior author.

Very low levels of SUA were also associated with a higher risk of death primarily in men.

Men who died with low SUA levels had a higher proportion of deaths from cancer.

Those with high SUA level who had a higher proportion of deaths from cardiovascular disease.
