Generative AI: GPs embrace technology despite training gaps

Amidst rising AI use in healthcare, doctors seek guidance on safe practices and patient privacy

Key points from article :

A new study published in the British Medical Journal reveals that one in five GPs in the UK is using generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, in their daily work. These tools are being employed to write patient documentation and even suggest alternative diagnoses, despite the fact that doctors have received little to no formal training on them. Dr. Charlotte Blease, associate professor at Sweden’s Uppsala University and the study’s lead author, expressed surprise at the extent of AI use, highlighting the lack of regulation and guidance in this area.

Dr. Blease raised concerns about the risks associated with AI, particularly its tendency to "hallucinate," or generate inaccurate information. She also pointed out the potential for patient privacy violations, as doctors may unintentionally share sensitive information with tech companies. Additionally, there is concern that AI could introduce or amplify biases in healthcare, potentially leading to unfair treatment of certain patients.

The study, which surveyed over 1,000 GPs, found that 28% of those using AI rely on it to suggest alternative diagnoses, while 29% use it to generate post-appointment documentation. Although the NHS has not yet provided formal guidelines for AI use, there is widespread support for AI in healthcare, particularly for administrative tasks. Dr. Blease emphasized the need for targeted training and clearer guidance to ensure safe and effective integration of AI in medical practice.
