Fate of Ming: the 507 years old clam

But there may be more older clams still living on the ocean floor

17-Nov-2013

Key points from article :

Ming was a clam that belonged to the species Arctica islandica.

About 200 clams were collected live from Icelandic shelf in 2006.

This was part of a research project to investigate climate change over the past thousand years.

All 200 of them were killed when frozen on board to take them to UK.

Later realised Ming was about 405 years old according to the number of bands in its shell.

Radiocarbon dating verified its age as 507 years making it the oldest-known animal.
