Bobby Mukkamala

Physician and President of the American Medical Association (AMA)

Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, MD, is a board-certified otolaryngologist and head–neck surgeon based in Flint, Michigan, and was sworn in as the 180th President of the American Medical Association in June 2025—marking the first time a physician of Indian heritage has held the position . A graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Mukkamala has served in the AMA since residency and held leadership roles including chair of the AMA Council on Science and Public Health and as a long-standing trustee since 2017 . Drawing on personal experience surviving an 8 cm brain tumor, he champions reforms in physician burnout, Medicare reimbursement, insurance prior authorization, and health equity, while continuing community advocacy in his hometown—especially in response to Flint’s water crisis .
