Widera Lab
Stem cell biology & regenerative medicine lab
We are an academic research laboratory in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Reading, (Reading, Berkshire, UK) studying adult stem cell biology as well as in the influence of injury and inflammation on somatic cells. We want to understand how inflammatory signalling pathways influence (de-) differentiation, proliferation, and migration of different (stem) cell types.
In addition, we work on human, ovine, and murine neural crest-derived stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells/marrow stromal cells and their secretome and develop 3D cell culture systems.
We further apply modern microscopy methods to address the stimulus-dependent behaviour of receptors (especially tumor necrosis receptor I and Toll-like receptor 4) and the resulting downstream signalling in stem cells and cancer (tumour) stem cells.
Finally, our lab is developing novel stem cell-based, cell-free therapies for degenerative disorders and conditions.
