An NHS surgeon, and a group of healthcare staff created a simple smartphone-based system to help GPs get fast advice on possible skin cancer cases. Instead of sending every patient to a hospital clinic, GPs in Norfolk and Waveney now use a small camera attachment and an app called Cinapsis to take clear photos of a patient’s skin and share them securely with specialist doctors.
These specialists review the images and send back guidance within about two days, which means many patients no longer need to wait weeks for an in-person appointment. The team tested the system across dozens of GP surgeries, and they saw a large drop in urgent referrals, with nearly four out of five cases managed without sending the patient to hospital.
Local doctors say the tool has made conversations between primary care and hospital teams easier and has helped them make quicker, more confident decisions for their patients. The project is still growing, with plans to extend it to all GP surgeries in the region.
