Sean Gibbons
Associate Professor of at the Institute for Systems Biology
Dr. Sean Gibbons is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB), where he leads a pioneering lab in microbial ecology, computational systems biology, and the human gut microbiome. After earning a PhD in Biophysical Sciences from the University of Chicago in 2015—dual-advised by Jack Gilbert and Maureen Coleman—and completing postdoctoral training at MIT, he joined ISB in 2018 supported by a Washington Research Foundation Distinguished Investigator Award. A multidisciplinary researcher, Gibbons blends computational models with experimental methods—such as MICOM, CyberGut, and MEDI—to explore how gut microbial communities evolve, interact with human hosts, and influence health outcomes ranging from personalized nutrition to drug responses. He is also spearheading “My Digital Gut,” a precision-nutrition platform aimed at predicting personalized dietary and probiotic interventions, and has been recognized as a 2023 Highly Cited Researcher, placing him among the top 0.1% of scientists.
