Connectome wants brain scans to be the new mental health check-up

Non-invasive brain scans may soon help track focus, memory, and cognitive health over time

As mental and neurological health concerns rise globally, Connectome, a neurotechnology company based in Switzerland and the UK, is pioneering a new approach: brain scans as routine health check-ups, much like blood tests. Co-founded by Lucas Scherdel, Connectome uses cutting-edge, non-invasive neuroimaging technology known as functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). This method tracks oxygenated blood flow across the brain’s cortex in real time, offering deep insights into how different areas of the brain work together during cognitive tasks.

The 30-minute scan session, powered by machine learning and AI, generates a personalised cognitive profile—a kind of mental fitness report—tracking memory, attention, stress, and brain flexibility over time. Through a companion app, users receive tailored advice to optimise brain health via lifestyle interventions like nutrition, exercise, sleep, and even neuromodulation. The aim is to provide early, positive, and actionable feedback to prevent decline rather than just detect it.

Connectome targets three key user groups: high performers and biohackers, older adults concerned about cognitive decline, and individuals with or suspecting ADHD. While not yet clinically approved, the platform has shown potential in identifying serious conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in validation studies. Its future vision includes partnering with neuromodulation companies and integrating with healthcare systems for broader preventive use.

In collaboration with Imperial College London and University of Zurich, Connectome is also building one of the world’s largest longitudinal brain datasets. The company hopes this growing data infrastructure will help scientists and clinicians develop new diagnostics and treatments for brain disorders, and empower individuals to take control of their cognitive wellbeing long before symptoms surface.
