Oxford University Scientific Society (OUSS)

Student scientific society at the University of Oxford.

The Oxford University Scientific Society (OUSS) was founded in 1882 as The Oxford University Junior Scientific Club, and has hosted many distinguished speakers over the years. It is the oldest student-run science society in the world, and one of the largest societies in Oxford.

The society offers members the opportunity to listen to interesting and talented speakers at the forefront of their field. Talks are held weekly and are intended to be of general scientific interest. Past speakers have included Prof Sir Martyn Poliakoff, Prof Marian Dawkins, and Prof Sir Roger Penrose.

We also organise free or subsidized visits to places of scientific interest. Past events have included tours of the Joint European Torus project, the Bodleian Library, the Oxford Museum of the History of Science, the National Space centre in Leicester, the Body Worlds exhibition in London, the TOAD gin/vodka/whisky distillery, and the MINI factory in Oxford. We love to take members’ suggestions for speakers or further visits.
