Academic geriatrician
Professor Miles D. Witham is a distinguished academic geriatrician at Newcastle University, holding the position of Professor of Trials for Older People. His work is dedicated to enhancing the inclusion of older populations in clinical research, particularly focusing on individuals with frailty, multimorbidity, or sarcopenia.
Before joining Newcastle University in April 2019, Professor Witham spent two decades at the University of Dundee, progressing through roles from research fellow to Reader. At Newcastle, he is a key member of the AGE Research Group, which conducts interdisciplinary studies aimed at improving health outcomes through a lifecourse approach, emphasizing ageing, sarcopenia, and multiple long-term conditions.
Professor Witham co-leads the Ageing, Sarcopenia, and Multimorbidity Theme within the NIHR Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), the sole BRC in the UK with a primary focus on translational ageing research. Additionally, he serves as the Theme Lead for the Ageing and Long-term Conditions Theme of the NIHR Newcastle Med-tech and In-vitro diagnostics Cooperative (MIC).
His research portfolio includes designing and conducting randomized controlled trials aimed at improving physical function and quality of life for older individuals. Notable projects under his leadership encompass the MET-PREVENT trial, which investigates the use of metformin for frailty and sarcopenia, and an MRC-funded study examining the effects of Acipimox on sarcopenia.
Beyond his research endeavors, Professor Witham is committed to education and capacity building. He delivers lectures on sarcopenia for the Masters of Research in Ageing program at Newcastle University and co-directs the "Introduction to Research with Older People" course offered by the NIHR Newcastle BRC. His mentorship extends to supervising a diverse array of undergraduate, Masters, PhD students, and higher specialist clinical trainee research projects.
